Solaris is designed to run seamlessly in the background, providing continuous, automatic monitor adjustments. This section details how Solaris manages its startup behavior and performance to ensure a smooth, efficient experience tailored to your system's needs.

Background Operation & Resource Usage

Solaris operates as a lightweight background application, ensuring your monitor's brightness and color temperature are always synchronized with the solar cycle and your circadian rhythm.

24/7 Monitoring: Once launched, Solaris runs continuously in the background to track the sun's position and apply brightness/color temperature changes.
Efficient Processing: The application is built to be resource-friendly, utilizing dedicated background processes to handle calculations and monitor adjustments without impacting your system's responsiveness. Tasks like setting brightness or color temperature are queued and processed asynchronously to maintain smooth performance.

Single Instance Mode

To prevent conflicts and optimize resource usage, Solaris is designed to run as a single instance.

Preventing Duplicates: If you attempt to launch Solaris while it's already running, a new instance will not be created.
Bringing to Foreground: Instead, the existing Solaris window will automatically be brought to the foreground, allowing you to access its dashboard and settings instantly.

Smart Game Mode

The Smart Game Mode is a key performance feature designed to prevent brightness or color temperature shifts from interfering with your gaming or other full-screen application experiences.

Automatic Detection: Solaris intelligently detects when you launch a game or a specified full-screen application.
Adjustment Lock: Upon detection, Solaris automatically locks all brightness and color temperature adjustments, pausing its core functionality until you exit the game/application. This ensures a stable display environment during critical activities.
Customizable Exclusions: You have full control over which applications trigger Game Mode:
- Whitelist: Add applications to a whitelist to always trigger the adjustment lock when they are running.
- Blacklist: Add applications to a blacklist to never trigger the adjustment lock, even if they are games (e.g., if you prefer Solaris to continue operating in a specific app).
To configure Game Mode:
1. Navigate to the Settings or Preferences section in the Solaris application.
2. Locate the Game Mode or Application Exclusions tab.
3. Add or remove applications from the Whitelist or Blacklist as desired.

Smooth Transitions

Solaris prioritizes a comfortable user experience. All brightness and color temperature adjustments are applied gradually over time. This "smooth transition" mechanism prevents sudden, jarring changes to your display, ensuring a natural and imperceptible shift in lighting, even during rapid solar elevation changes. This gentle adjustment is a core part of Solaris's design and does not require user configuration.
